Scholarship Funds of the WMU Foundation
Jessica Powell Loftis Scholarship for Acteens
The Jessica Powell Loftis Scholarship for Acteens was established in January 1995 by Woman's Missionary Union upon the initial gift by Miss Loftis's mother, Deborah Carlton Loftis and her grandmother and her husband, Mary Carlton Stear and Captain David Stear. The objective of this scholarship fund is to provide training and leadership experiences for Acteens and their leaders, or it may be used for academic studies as well.
Contributions to the Jessica Powell Loftis Scholarship for Acteens will help Acteens who plan to attend college or other training events. The scholarships are open to applicants who have been active in Acteens for at least one year and will attend an Acteens event, or to Acteens leaders who are pursuing academic or leadership training.
Carolyn Weatherford Scholarship Fund & R. Keith Parks Scholarship Fund
Since the early 1900s, WMU has encouraged women to train for Christian service. Several scholarship programs continue to this day. The Endowment Committee of the WMU Executive Board awards the scholarships in June of each year to deserving women in seminary, divinity school, or on special assignment.
The Carolyn Weatherford Scholarship Fund was begun in appreciation for the executive director of national WMU in its centennial year, 1988. Carolyn Weatherford Crumpler served at the national level from 1974-89. The purpose of the fund is to provide assistance to women as they fulfill their call from God. The scholarships can be used for academic preparation or for internships that will develop their abilities to participate in WMU or missions work in the U.S.
The R. Keith Parks Scholarship Fund was begun in 1992 in recognition of Dr. Parks's outstanding work in international missions. Dr. Parks served through the Foreign Mission Board (now the International Mission Board) from 1980 to 1992. The purpose of the fund is to provide assistance to women in fulfilling God's call on their life for work in international missions. The scholarships can be used for academic preparation or for internships that will develop their abilities to participate in WMU or missions work on the international field.
Past recipients have used these scholarships to further their academic and professional development, and are active in North American and international missions today.
June Whitlow Endowment Fund for WMU Leadership Development
For 35 years June Whitlow has worked tirelessly to encourage women to be involved in missions. She has provided leadership to countless women seeking to dedicate their lives to sharing the news of salvation through Jesus Christ.
The June Whitlow Endowment Fund was created in 1997, in appreciation for Miss Whitlow's service to WMU and to the Baptist Nursing Fellowship. The purpose is to provide scholarships to women of the churches for training in WMU and missions education leadership through WMU-sponsored leadership training and through the Center for Christian Women's Leadership Development (Samford University). The scholarship may be for academic training, continuing education, or a nonbaccalaureate curriculum.
Miss Whitlow's desire is for more women to be prepared for leadership roles in the churches, social institutions, government, and the marketplace. She believes that "Woman's Missionary Union is in a strategic place in the church as it offers women a place of service." To be available to serve, they must first be trained.
Your contributions to the June Whitlow Endowment Fund will be an ongoing source of financial support for future Christian women leaders, and an expression of your gratitude to Miss Whitlow for her many years of dedicated service to the women of WMU.
Please join us in helping women to follow God's call to missions by supporting any of these scholarship funds.
