"God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging" (Psalm 46:1-3 NIV).

    Charitable Gift Annuities

"Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things" (Matt. 25:21 NIV). We all know the story. Jesus told the parable about a master who left three servants in charge of his finances. The master spoke these words to the two servants who made a return on his investment. But to the other, his words were harsher. "Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him" (Matt. 25:28 NIV).

Christians know the importance of a wise investment. We know that every dollar we earn belongs to God. It is our responsibility to invest our money wisely. We cannot spend it flagrantly and expect to have enough to sustain us after retirement. But we cannot hoard our money either. We must find a balance of the two that is glorifying to God. One way to do that is to give our money to a trusted organization to manage it for us. At the WMU Foundation, we understand the importance of honoring God with our finances, but we also know that trust must first be established between the donor and the organization.

One way we establish trust is through a Charitable Gift Annuity (CGA). A simple contract between a donor and a charity, a CGA allows donors and charities the benefit of a reciprocal relationship. A CGA is a way to make a significant donation to the charity of your choice while receiving fixed, regular payments for the rest of your life and/or the life of a loved one. There are several ways to benefit from this relationship:

  • Augment your retirement plan by establishing a one-person CGA based on your own life. Since the payout rates are set by the American Council on Gift Annuities (ACGA) and they are based on the annuitant's age, the rates are typically far better than current CD rates.
  • Establish a two-person (typically a husband and wife) CGA based on both their ages. At the death of one spouse, payments go to the living spouse. At the death of the other, the remainder goes to the charity.
  • Supplement an adult child's retirement by establishing a deferred CGA based on the life of the child.
  • Cushion a parent's income when the child establishes a CGA based on the parent's life.

These are just a few of the many advantages to a CGA. Establishing a CGA is a valuable tool to augment retirement income because it helps ensure that the donor will not run out of income later in life. The donor is assured the same amount, regardless of fluctuation or change within the charitable organization. Payments are typically made in quarterly installments, with a portion of the income tax- free.

More than any monetary benefit, however, a CGA creates satisfaction on the part of the donor. When you establish a relationship with a charitable organization like the WMU Foundation, your gift furthers the mission of the organization or charity they support. In fact, you can specify the exact endowment or fund you want the remainder from the CGA to support. For instance, after you have passed on, the residual money available after your death can be applied to your state's Touch Tomorrow Today Endowment or any other fund or endowment of your choice. Even after you have passed on, the endowments and ministries you supported can thrive when you choose today what you will support tomorrow.
